TOP TEN TRENDS TO COME OUT OF FASHION MONTH
BY Abby Yong
This season’s trends have undoubtedly seen a widespread ripple across social media as designers, showgoers and fashion enthusiasts alike eagerly embrace the latest maximalist youthquake to influence our style of dress. From alluring cut-outs to commanding micro mini skirts, collections and street style quite aptly reflected our desire to reveal, recycle and rejoice - for come rain or shine, Fashion Month had indeed arrived.
Below, we unfold the top ten most prominent trends shown on the runways of the world and the streets.
Micro mini skirts
The Y2K trend shows no sign of stopping, bringing us the attention-grabbing micro mini skirt in its tiniest variation yet. This piece can be worn over flared pants or sheer tights, accompanied by twisting sandals, embellished platforms or knee-length boots for a versatile day-to-night look.
2. Statement coats
Outerwear has entered a new rebellious phase, proving no need to compromise even when layering up against the cold. Worn as coat dresses, covered with arresting prints and thrown over monochromatic outfits for interest, the statement coat offers convenience and empowerment.
3. Cut-outs
The ever-popular cut-outs retain their mass following, showing up in dresses artfully slashed at the waist, plunging necklines and exposing bare midriffs. Functionality is at its core, providing the perfect solution to smart-casual dress codes, instant mood-lifters and last-minute looks.
4. Monochrome
Perhaps the most timeless trend of all, monochrome returns in bold, pastel and everything in between. Pair with clothes of different textures and with a statement bag or shoe - the possibilities are endless.
5. Gloves
Whether practical or purely decorative, gloves adorned the arms of models and showgoers throughout the cities. Draw the eye by scrunching them up at the elbow of an oversized blazer or stack rings on top of a sheer pair for the finishing touch to your next evening look.
6. Tall boots
Matched with tiny hemlines or flowing mid-length dresses, tall boots are a staple of transeasonal wardrobes. Try swapping tights for a thigh-high pair underneath a mini-skirt or wear them over skinny jeans for an elongated silhouette.
7. Point-toe heels
Spotted both on and off the runway, point-toe heels exude a quiet elegance that quickly smartens up any outfit. Why not wear with a pair of angular sunglasses and a trenchcoat or a matching skirt suit?
8. Shearling
Often used alongside leather or corduroy, shearling delivers comfort and rich textural quality to looks. Create shape in a floor-sweeping shearling coat with a thick belt or a layer a shorter, lined jacket on top of a printed dress.
9. Lingerie
Lace, sequins and ruffles all adorned the boudoir-inspired pieces of this season, presenting a refreshing mix of daring and femininity. Bring nightwear into day with the help of masculine wide-leg pants and pinstriped pencil skirts.
10. FUR
There’s nothing better than when fashion meets practicality, and with that dreaded Winter cold looms the prospect of enriching our looks with soft warm furs (of course we advocate hunting for second hand furs/faux). Again, akin to shearling, fur brings a textural arousing detail to a look, sure to make people gravitate towards stroking you (just remind people of social distancing). We prefer wearing yours open or with belts to cinch in at the waist or even a little crop over some high waisted skin tight pants and boots.
